In terms of energy, there is not a single answer. It all depends on what forms of energy are available in the region, city or country you want to provide for, and what applications the energy is needed for.
For instance, solar energy may be more convenient in places with a lot of sun all over the year than in Northern countries where the winters get quite gloomy. Other isolated places, like in the jungles or not-so urban regions, they need energy at smaller scales and the electrical grid may not get to them due to several geopolitical and economical reasons… so in those cases, they may use bioenergy (as from wood or plants) to provide for the small scale needs. There is also the need to replace fossil energy and fossil materials that are used to produce items we use every day. For instance, plastics. You need energy (which can be provided by solar/wind sources), but you also need plants (bioenergy) to provide for the starting matter that will end up as plastics.

At the moment I think if we can use renewable energy sources in our energy system it can allow us to reduce our emissions, but we can use technologies such as carbon capture and storage with fossil fuels to reduce their emissions also. But in my opinion, renewable sources are the best.
