One of the things I am currently working on is to use standard methods to describe what biomass and organic materials are made of, and use this information to predict how the material reacts under high temperatures… This is achieved by using computational methods to describe how both the chemical reactions that biomass undergo and biomass transport and moves in a real reactor. This is a bit complex because Engineers want computational tools that work fast and that are easy to use; however, fast tools are not really the best at predicting what happens with not-so common materials, like grasses, or agricultural residues, or sludge from wastewater treatment. So we need to work on improving these tools.

I would like to make sure that my work has made some impact on Ireland’s transition towards a low-carbon energy system and help Ireland to make sure it reaches its different emission targets for climate change.

My aim is to find a material or materials which can cleanly and efficiently convert solar energy into fuels.
Ultimately I would like to see something I worked on used in the real world.

I really want to see some of the work of myself and my group influencing the government’s decisions on moving to a low-carbon future. I enjoy science, experimenting, and building models but ultimately you need people in power to take up your ideas and implement them. That is the biggest aim of my studies!
